Today’s consumers are savvy, and that means you’ll need visually compelling content to connect with your target audience. Here are some guidelines to help you stay on top of your game and deliver cutting-edge design to clients – and their customers.

#1: Prep Work Is a Must

Whether it’s generating buzz for a new product, revamping an existing one or pushing a game-changing idea, the designer needs to know the intentions of the project in no uncertain terms.

Before taking on a new project, it’s vital that you’re on the same page as the client and understands exactly what they need. So the first priority is to figure out the ultimate objective your client wants to achieve.

From there you can discuss the other crucial details, like the target audience, and the medium to be used. Once you factor in these considerations, you’ll have a much clearer plan – and outline the specific steps to execute it.

#2: Understand the Underlying Message

A picture is worth a thousand words as they say, so it’s crucial that you know the specific message you want to get across.

Whether you’re dealing with a video, a logo, or a website layout, it’s meant to communicate a feeling or a concept to the end-user.

So make sure to take note of the client’s verbiage and watch out for key phrases like “simple and elegant,” “youthful and dynamic” or “aggressive and in-your-face.”

Understanding the overall theme will serve as your anchor as you go into the project.

#3: Focus On Excellent User Experience

Once you’ve gone through the first two steps, you’ll be able to eliminate all the other options and possibilities for executing your design project. Your next priority would then be to create the best possible experience for the end-user.
In the world of marketing, this is known as User Experience or UX.

Fantastic UX isn’t just about the value customers get out of your design, but also the way that content is delivered to them.

Whether you’re in the business of designing a physical store or a website, it’s critical that the experience is intuitive and seamless as possible.

That means you need to put a lot of foresight and empathy into your design project.

Always remember the fundamental need you’re trying to satisfy, and design every aspect of your design around that.

The various elements should communicate a consistent look and feel that’s synonymous with your client’s brand.

Here are some questions you can ask yourself. Polishing the following elements will translate to excellent UX:

  • Is the design legible?
  • Am I using the right font with the appropriate kerning and spacing?
  • Is the text line too wide or too narrow? Is the text alignment appropriate for the project?
  • Did I check for grammatical errors?
  • Did I scan for widows and orphans in my text?
  • Do I have my target audience in mind at all times?
  • Do the colour motif and shapes create the right feeling?
  • Am I using the right amount of white space to balance out the entire design and create maximum impact?

While you’ve got other factors to consider aside from the above, this is an excellent place to start.

All in all, these guidelines will help you come up with a crystal-clear goal and point you in the right direction. Best of all, you can take on any project with confidence and hit the mark every single time.
